A Palestinian security source said Sunday that Hamas operatives had cleared the debris from the explosion which killed seven Palestinian civilians on Friday in order to frustrate the IDF's attempts to investigate the incident.
IDF sources said Saturday that the Palestinians are not cooperating in the investigation of the Gaza beach incident , during which seven civilians were killed.

Gaza Division Commander Brigadier General Aviv Kochavi is heading the IDF investigation.

The sources said the Palestinians have not disclosed information regarding the explosion’s exact location and time.

The Israeli military is still trying to determine if shells it fired killed seven members of a Palestinian family picnicking on a beach in Gaza on Friday.

The military has accounted for five of the six shells it fired into Gaza, and said they didn't kill the family.

But investigators aren't sure what happened to the sixth shell. It may have fallen among the Ghalia family.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday said he was sorry about the deaths. But chief of staff Dan Halutz said an expression of regret does not mean Israel is taking responsibility, because the investigation is continuing.

The uncertainty about the sixth shell undermines earlier comments Sunday, when a top Israeli general said the country's Armed Forces didn't cause the explosion.

Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant said Israeli forces stopped firing 15 minutes before the explosion, meaning Israel couldn't have been responsible.

This appeared to be the most likely scenario during the initial stages of the investigation, however, as it advances there is growing skepticism about it."

In some instances, Palestinian civilians were killed when they touched the unexploded shells including youths who sought to dismantle the ordnance in order to sell the metal."

Less than two weeks ago Israeli naval commandos operated in the northern Gaza Strip and ambushed a team of Qassam rocket operators. The Palestinians reported that groups of divers had arrived by sea, and militant forces announced that they would find ways to prevent any similar operations in the future. The possibility does exist that areas near the beach were mined and that the family members accidentally set off an explosive device that was intended to destroy a team of Israeli special-forces troops. Possible evidence of this hypothesis are Palestinian eye-witnesses who said that Hamas militants rushed to the site of the blast on Friday evening to collect remnants of the explosives."

Seguiremos el tema.
